Christ the Redeemer actually had its primordial idea conceived by
Missionary Lazarist French,
Fr. Pedro Maria Boss
who arrived in Rio in 1859 was a chaplain in the college chapel where Immaculate Conception
today in the chapel of the place there is
BASILICA OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION
which is well worth a visit.
Pedro Maria Boss priest had in his mind and in his heart, the dream to honor the Son of God,
OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST
building a majestic monument, (as it is ...) that could be seen by everyone which would direct his gaze the imposing mountain of Corcovado at that time still waiting for the
greater symbol of the Christian faith:
CHRIST THE REDEEMER!
Such was his faith and his love for a day to see on the Corcovado a monument to Jesus Christ, that Father Pedro Maria wrote the following poem:
The Corcovado ... There stands the stone giant, steep, towering and sad, as interogando the immense horizon - When will?There are so many centuries hope! Yes here are single pedestal in the world. When it comes to statue like me, colossal picture of who made me?...Wake up quickly, raises that sublime summit, the image of Jesus Salvador-There Goes my humble cry,God provides echoed throughout BrazilNot all for various reasons will read the book; whereas in all languages and languages the picture will tell the great and the small, the sage and the illiterate, everyone: I am the way the truth and the life ... Come all to me.

That was a great Master in the Art Deco style and hired by Engennheiro Brazilian Heitor da Silva Costa, it was entrusted with the task of producing the plaster casts of what would be the hands and the head (face) of Christ, thus giving them the beauty and serenity that this wonderful style and able to represent.
Paul Landowski know how anyone convey the beauty and subtlety that a monument in honor of Our Lord Jesus Christ need to have and this became the largest monument in Art Deco WORLD!

WHO WAS HEITOR LEVY?
This is without doubt one of the most important characters in this story and perhaps the most forgotten! Little is heard about this man a Jew, that when mentioned only appears as master of works of construction of the monument to Christ.
Heitor Levy was a simple and discreet man, so little remembered and rarely mentioned when speaking of Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro ... But he was the only one to leave his own family he loved, and to move to the top Corcovado, where he lived for five years, concentrating so superhuman Construction of this wonderful monument that today symbolizes our country and the Catholic faith in Brazil! Moved by love for art and the realization of this very important work, Heitor Levy who was also engineer and sculptor, was responsible for rebuilding the coming of France molds, retracing their lines, since they were plaster and many arrived damaged in Brazil and there used his great sculptor skills. Also as an architect and engineer, contributed their wisdom redoing the calculations of the statue where it concluded that it could not be supported obeying the original calculations, modifying them ... Two important changes made by Heitor Levy: The tilt of the head of the monument, as if looking at the city below, which makes it the most aerodynamic image reducing the action of the wind on it.The second major change was the insertion of a steel beam to support the arms and hands without which they would not bear his weight and fall.
Heitor Levy was involved so with the mission entrusted to him, to carry out the projects of his great friend and partner namesake Heitor da Silva Costa, the engineer responsible for the winning project that gives rise to the monument we see today.
One of the most important and decisive moments of life Heitor Levy was his decision to leave his family and move to the Corcovado, where only left after completing the work, the mission!
The other important turning point in his life was the accident he suffered on a late afternoon, when employees already down the work, Hector decided to climb alone the statue to supervise the work as usual and mark the position for placement of the head of Christ ... at this time, the weather turned suddenly the relentless winds of the Corcovado overthrew shoulder Christ, during the fall managed to cling to scaffolding and hung there by one hand screaming for any employee to hear you ... an employee could hear their cries and ran to his rescue holding his arm ... but Levy was a very large, heavy man and saw that the officer was only risking but could not save him and ordered:"Let me go, I have fulfilled my mission in Corcovado" But the official insisted on hold him and cry for help, and soon others arrived and managed to save him. after this great feat Heitor Levy who was a Jew converted to Christianity and thanks, did Christ's Heart also inside the image being the only part of the image that is within the same finish it out by putting into it the family tree of his family and all the employees of that fantastic work where more than 5 years of work there was no accident or death!
For this Heitor Levy deserves to be remembered and congratulated.
